What You Need to Know Before Buying Zebra Ribbons

While there are many Zebra ribbons on the market, it is important to purchase the correct ribbon for your specific printer. The ribbon must physically fit into the printer and be wound with the ink-coated side in the correct orientation. For Zebra printers, this means the ink-coated side should be facing out.

Confirm the core size, width, and length to be sure they fit. You can search for Zebra ribbons by model (Zebra ZD420, Zebra ZD620, Zebra T402, Zebra 170 / 172 PAX, Zebra HT-146, Zebra TLP 2746e, Zebra ZE 500, Zebra Eltron 2044-2046 Eclipse), or core size (½ inch, 1-inch, or cartridge). Further refinements make your search even easier, such as type, width, length, or color.

In addition, make sure to select a ribbon that is compatible with the intended print job. For example, if you intend to print barcode polyester labels for plumbing equipment, you will need a more durable Zebra resin ribbon than you would for retail price tags. For example, if you'll be printing a large amount of 2-inch labels on a 4-inch printer, it's smart to order a 2.5-inch Zebra ribbon for that print job to minimize ribbon waste and reduce costs.

Further, the longer the ribbon length, the more labels you can print before having to reload the ribbon. While a longer ribbon means you won't have to change the ribbon as often, it will be bulkier. Make sure your Zebra printer supports ribbon rolls with larger diameters when ordering large thermal ribbon rolls.

The main difference between the ribbons is the size (core and length). Industrial printers tend to accommodate larger length Zebra barcode ribbons due to their higher volume requirements.
