Epson CW-C6000 and C6500 Pigment Ink Cartridges

Epson CW-C6000 and CW-C6500 color label printers are either “Gloss” or “Matte” printers. If you ordered your printer before April 1, 2021, you may not know which version you have. By default, these early printers shipped with the Gloss Black ink (BK), though the reseller could change the gloss black to matte black (MK) ink if required by the customer. However, that conversion to matte black ink is permanent, and matte black ink must be used on that printer moving forward.

This process caused a lot of confusion. Starting on April 1, 2021, Epson changed the model family to make it easier. Now you can buy the Matte or Gloss version depending on your requirements.

Since the black inks are not interchangeable, you must use the right one. Before ordering a new black ink cartridge, double check which ink cartridge is actually in your printer (it will say BK for Gloss or MK for Matte). This is important because if you order the wrong black cartridge and install it on your printer, it will not work. Plus, since that cartridge has been opened, it is not returnable, so you will have wasted a complete cartridge.

Original models and SKUs launched in 2020:

These original models listed above shipped with the BK Gloss black ink and could have been changed by dealer or the distributor to MK matte black, if that is what you required.

Models launched April 1, 2021:

Since the launch of the new models in April 2021, there is a big shortage of these printers in the market. If you need a Matte version and it’s unavailable, you buy the Gloss version and convert it to Matte by also buying the MK Matte black ink cartridge and install it in the printer. Whichever black ink cartridge you initially install in the printer will lock it permanently to that type. Moving forward you must use that type of ink only.

Epson CW-C6000 and Epson CW-C6500 printers use the same cyan, magenta, and yellow ink cartridges. As far as black ink goes, you must purchase the black pigment ink formula intended for your specific version — either matte or gloss. It is important to use matte black C6000/C6500 ink cartridges with the matte version of the printer and gloss black C6000/C6500 ink cartridges with the gloss version of the printer. These two ink types are NOT interchangeable.

What's the Difference Between Matte and Glossy Inks?

The black inks used by the Epson CW-C6000 and CW-C6500 printers are formulated for either matte or glossy media. The black inks are the only difference between the matte or glossy versions of these popular printers.

• Gloss Epson CW-C6000/C65000 Black Ink (BK) — This gloss pigment black ink is intended for use with glossy media, allowing you to produce durable labels that have a shiny finish. The gloss version of C6000 and C6500 printers can be used to print a wide range of aesthetically pleasing labels.
• Matte Epson CW-C6000/C6500 Black Ink (MK) — This matte pigment black ink is intended for use with matte media. This pigment black ink cartridge produces deeper and more durable blacks. The matte version of C6000 and C6500 printers is typically used to print barcode labels, shipping labels, outdoor labels, GHS chemical labels, and other industrial labels requiring dark blacks and durability.

Note that both the matte and gloss versions of Epson CW-C6000 and CW-6500 printers can produce GHS BS5609 chemical labels when used with our C6000/C6500 GHS BS5609 Chemical labels.
