Epson CW-C6500 vs Afinia L701: Print Quality Differences Explained

Epson CW-C6500 vs Afinia L701: Print Quality Differences Explained

Posted by BK on 21st Mar 2022

When it comes to choosing a printer, there are many factors to consider including affordability, print speed, print size and capacity, and versatility. One of the most important is print quality. After all, what's the point of having your own color label printer if it can't produce beautiful prints? Today, we're going to compare the print quality of the Epson CW-C6500 (1200 dpi) and the Afinia L701 (1600 dpi). You'll see that the 400 dpi print difference really does make a difference and could be the deciding factor.

Epson CW-C6500 Print Quality

The Epson CW-C6500 is an 8-inch color label printer that uses pigment inks and produces a maximum of 1200 dots per inch (dpi). The pigment inks are ideal for printing durable, smudge-free labels on matte, and in some cases, glossy media. The downside of pigment inks is that they don't produce as vibrant of colors as dye-based inks. In addition, with a max print resolution of just 1200 dpi, the print quality of the CW-C6500 isn't nearly as impressive as the Afinia L701, which prints photo-quality labels at 1600 dpi.

However, for printing certain types of labels such as barcodes, shipping labels, GHS labels, food service labels, and carton box labels, the Epson CW-C6500's print quality is adequate.

Afinia L701 Print Quality

The Afinia L701 is a full-color, 8-inch label printer that uses dye-based inks to produce beautiful, photo-quality labels at resolutions up to 1600 dpi. The advantage of using dye-based inks is that they produce more vibrant colors than pigment inks. However, the downside is that they're not as durable as pigment inks. Dye inks are commonly used for high-resolution product labels like those you would find on a gourmet food product, craft beer, or luxury beauty item.

The Afinia L701's print quality is impressive, especially when printing on glossy media. The colors are vivid and the detail is amazing. With a maximum print resolution of 1600 dpi, the Afinia L701 produces photo-quality labels that look like they were printed professionally.

As a side note, the Afinia L701 also prints full color, 8-inch-wide labels at 1600 dpi significantly faster than the Epson CW-C6500. How much faster? 6-to-8 inches per second on the L701 at 1600 dpi versus just 0.20 inches per second on the CW-C6500 at 1200 dpi.

Side-by-side Print Quality Comparison

When you compare two printed labels from the Epson CW-C6500 and the Afinia L701, it's easy to see the difference in print quality. The Afinia L701's print quality is significantly better than the Epson CW-C6500, especially when printing on glossy media. The extra 400 dpi makes a big difference, and you'll be able to see it in the printed labels. Send us your design file and we'll be happy to print a free sample label for you on both printers so you can see the difference for yourself.
